Bruce Pollock

Lives and works in Philadelphia

In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Bruce Pollock produced small, heavily-worked, painted and sanded salvaged wood structures, which, though abstract, reflected his interest in the endless variations of Philadelphia row home architecture. Eventually he turned to painting, first in acrylic and then in oil, gradually refining his work to embrace organic mathematical systems, such as the Fibonacci Series and Spirals, which relate to recurring designs and patterns found in nature. His meticulously articulated canvases are at once vertiginously complex and instantly appealing as intricate and strangely familiar archetypes. Pollock explains the unraveling “fields of energy” that inform his lyrical revision of optical painting in terms of methods and layers of observation: “When you look at nature, it doesn’t reveal itself immediately. The more you look, the more that you see. … It just keeps opening up in different ways. I work hard at trying to make a painting do that.”

Pollock’s paintings have been exhibited nationally, including one-person shows at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, New York; Cavin Morris Gallery, New York; and Karen Lennox Gallery, Chicago. His work can also be viewed in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia.
